Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii)

Another great selection for adding a vibrant splash of color to your yard is the Autumn Sage.

Native to Central Southwest Texas, this perennial shrub remains green during the entirety of the year while blooming March-November.  They are perennials, so depending on the micro climate, they could use a pretty aggressive winter cut back if they experience any negative effects from the cold. The Flowers are usually red in color, but can come in varying  shades of pink, orange, white, and purple.  Here are some additional facts about the Autumn Sage in order to help you determine if it is a good fit for your yard:

  • Usually grow to be approximately 3′ in diameter
  • Low amount of water usage
  • Thrives in areas where sunlight is plentiful
  • Rumor has it that their blooms are a bit tasty (I haven’t tried it, so be careful)
  • Requires dry soil
  • There are numerous subspecies which are grouped under the name “Salvia greggii types”
  • They are great for hummingbirds. See more here

This is a great Central Texas plant for your yard. They are native and economical in the water arena. They are beautiful and attract wonderful wildlife (hummingbirds). We highly recommend them for your yard.
